In Amsterdam your dog stays on the lead in the street and in most parks, except where a sign marks an off-leash area (losloopgebied). Each borough decides which fields those are, and the city's dog map shows where dogs can run free, where they're banned, and where a rule only applies part of the year. Dogs can run free in much of the Amsterdamse Bos, with a lead rule around the main entrance, and the Vondelpark and Westerpark both have spots where dogs can stretch their legs. You pick up after your dog everywhere, off-leash fields included, and Amsterdam hasn't charged a dog tax since 2016. Because the nearest off-leash field changes from one neighbourhood to the next, a sitter from your own area, whether that's the Jordaan, De Pijp, Oost or Noord, is usually the easiest option: they already know the fields and don't have to cycle across town.
